Friday - What will you Bring?

I'm hoping for:

laundry time (I'm going to iron our clothes for the second time this year. Ironing always tests my patience. I can't seem to understand how, after you iron one pant leg or one shirt arm, you switch to the other one without getting the one you just did wrinkly! I will conquer the iron tonight, I feel like its my time! Bryan is much better with the iron than I am, a fact that he owes to his infinite amount of patience and years ironing his Air Force uniform. He is currently reading a book called "Why Men Don't Iron." and irony is not lost on us!)

Paying some bills

time with my boy and four legged creatures - maybe we'll knock off some of our new netflix movies we've got at home. I love spending time with you..

Quiet Reading time - Julia Childs is giving me so much hope that maybe one day I'll be a world famous pseudo french chef!

Gem from a book

"Paul was a very accomplished exhibits man, took great pride in a job well done....but he wasn't professionally ambitious. He often lunched alone with his camera on the Seine, or came home and had lunch with me - chicken soup, leftovers - followed by a brief nap. This habit was probably not good for his career, bu that wasn't the point. We were enjoying life together..."

That little excerpt jumped out to me as i was reading last night, and i loved it. it seems like sometimes its not ok to want to slow down, not do so much, not fight so hard for a career, and it was refreshing to read that doing just that is sometimes the most enjoyable in life. Apparently Julia Child is wise in things other than just cooking!

And a gem of another kind! A picture of Milo from the archives - the day after i brought him home. Little did i know that he would grow into the big beasty that he is today!

Wednesday Painting

The day is done and I am gratefully going home - it has been a slow slow day here, if you couldn't already tell from my 500 posts. Here's one of my favorite paintings, purely for visual, non-analytical purposes.

Have a lovely Wednesday Evening

Love from my friend

In response to my post about summer reading, my friend found this on her visit to the library this morning and sent me these great pictures.

This makes me feel like we're not very far away from each other!

thanks for the photos and the thought

Freezer Math

I just got off the phone with one of my favorite people in the whole world, Amy Hammond, who just landed an awesome job as Exhibition Manager at the Susquehanna Art Museum in Harrisburg, Pa. The conversation we had was much too hilarious and inappropriate for work (eek!) but it was almost like we couldn't contain ourselves from giggling and laughing quietly. maybe that's why personal conversations are supposed to be kept to a minimum! Because its just too darn funny to hear that Amy got flagged down because her car (Godiva) had lost its muffler on the way to work. if you knew this car, you would know how hysterical that is.

Amy and i have known each other since 1999, and lived with each other from 2000-2006, but it feels like we've known each other for twice that amount of time. We like to joke that we're common law partners not just because of how long we bunked together, but because we know each other so well. I've experienced a lot with Amy, both dignified and not so much, but one of the funniest stories has to be the time we interviewed for jobs at Trader Joes.

We had just moved to Bethesda, Maryland and were looking for jobs, it was my first year of grad school and Amy's second. We began the day totally full of hope, bright eyed and bushy tailed, certain that among all the places we applied, one of them was bound to work out. We dressed up cute and acted polite, said yes, thank you, etc. and the day turned into one big disappointment - it was just not going well. Our last stop of the day was at TJ's - located on a strip that we had been up and down (think a Maryland version of Aurora) (if you're not from Seattle, think depressing, concrete, never ending chain malls)all day. Anyway, we walk into TJ's no longer cute and fresh, and ask one of the baggers where we go to fill out an application. He signals this guy from across the way that comes over and introduces himself as the FIRST MATE. yep - there's a theme here. So the First mate then proceeds to put us through a series of interview questions in front of the store (customers, other workers, etc.) and we're answering them, as best we can, kind of taken aback at the fortitude needed to be a bagging girl at trader joes. well then the first mate RINGS THE BELL, and has a bagger come over. He then hands us our MATH TESTS to do (we're art majors so this introduced a not so subtle squeeze of anxiety on our hearts) and then, since theres no place really to take the tests, has the bag boy lead us to the FREEZER to take the test. Once in the freezer, we get comfortable on some overturned crates and proceed to refresh our memory of long division. At this point we cant believe this is happening, but it becomes real enough when one of the workers comes back there TO SPEND HIS BREAK - IN THE FREEZER.

That was the fastest math test I've ever taken.

We finish up and take them to the first mate, who proceeds to correct them right there, then RINGS THE BELL AGAIN to announce to us and the store what our scores were. At this point, it was one of the silliest and most random things i had ever not expected going into an interview. Needless to say, neither one of us ever had (or plans to have) illustrious jobs at Trader Joe's, despite their awesome selection of Albanian string cheese and cheap wine.

Amy and i can put ourselves in fits retelling this story to each other, and that's one of the millions of reasons i love her so much!

Yo Adriene! We Did It!

So i finally saw Rocky. I, II, III, and IV. and i fell in love. How could i have gone this long without having seen the greatness that is this movie series? And i have to admit, shamefully, that i had MADE FUN of it whenever i caught snippits on TBS or TNT - clearly not understanding the context that is this great movie.

Rocky is action movie, guy movie, romance, political commentary on US-Russian relations, montage extraordinaire, and super entertaining all rolled into one. How can anyone resist? I have fully embraced my new love for the Balboaster, pumping my fists when i run and promising to somehow incorporate the italian stallion (or his soundtrack) into every milestone in my life. Perhaps i will even name my two firstborn Cuff and Link.

I must give proper credit to Bryan as well, for doing his best to ignore my hate-filled ignorant jabs at the movie prior to my viewing it, for forcing me to sit still and stay awake through the entire thing, and for not rubbing it in my face all the time for my quick hypocritcal turn around! He is truly a benevolent and wise man that knows what's good for me. I should listen to him more often!

Brother and Soon to be Sister-in-Law

This was taken at our "sort of" annual (whenever all the kids are in town at once) ping pong dinner at my aunt and uncle's house last year. I love this picture - doesn't it look like fun?
Elizabeth is getting super excited for the wedding on August 10th - can't wait to be out there to be a part of the whole shibang!

summer

A good friend of mine just wrote about her first day of summer vacation and it reminded me that even though i may no longer get the summer vacation of lore: seemingly endless months and months off between june and september, that i still think of these great months of hot weather as summertime in my head.
hahaha - now that i think of it - this might be my first official summer as a working adult - i guess thats what happens when you go to school for years and years!

I am happy to have a job (so happy!) but i will be putting lemons in my hair for the sun to work its magic during the weekend, and i will be reading and reading during the summer evenings. You know what one of my favorite parts of summertime was as a kid? the local library reading program, where you go down and sign up, recording all the books you read during the summer, getting stickers along the way! Wasnt that fun? our library was just a (long)block away, but you could make it shorter by cutting through the back of the hill, and coming down right in front of the lib instead of going all the way around. that way was only really safe to do with older brothers though, as they helped keep the scary dogs and weird people (mostly in little sisters imaginations) at bay.
I wonder why they dont do these awesome summer reading programs for grown ups? i still like getting stickers and seeing my long, wonderfully filled out little sheet of "Books I've Read This Summer."
Well - if anyone wants some fun stickers for reading books, you know who to tell!

After Work

i wish that i could blog on the way home from work - i come up with great little snippets that i always want to record and then always lose them by the time i sit down at home - probably for the best though, as that would be more dangerous than texting while driving! something i never do..

anyway, im home now and about to go tidy up the house but first - i just got three new books from the library today! (i think i might nominate the library for best invention ever) - a new book about beauty in the history of art, my life in france by julia childs (talk about advanced cooking!) and a novel called Anonymous Lawyer thats for Bryan but that i might steal or request that he read out loud to me at night..
I interviewed for a job at an art library once - it was the perfect job i thought (scheduling for the other librarians, leniant and fun dress code, and helping undergrad art students with their research). boy did i ever botch that interview. def one of my worst ever - i wish i had more character and i was one of those people that knew it was a lost cause, and did something really stupid and memorable in the middle of it and then left with dignity. nope - not me! i just sank and sank, until mercessly, they called it short.
Phew - what a memory! but i guess we all have those great awesome interview moments of terror.
ok - off to clean, then clean myself, then hop into a book and dinner.
Bon Night!

sunday afternoon

Hello and welcome to our weekend! Its late on sunday afternoon and we've been sort of busy -cleaning up the house in anticipation of the boy's grandfather and great uncle coming into town on tuesday, and also just taking care of things around the house that need to be done. I've bought myself a new Real Simple mag that i am about to dig into - it was too good to resist in the grocery line. we also ordered pizza this afternoon, since i spent the morning cleaning and neither one of us wanted to see the kitchen dirtied so quickly! ive finished up my james herriot books - up next on the docket it a book ive seen recommended in the blogosphere called "eat, love, pray" (i think thats the name of it - something with those three words) - i ordered used off amazon the other day and should be showing up any day now!
I tried making some upside down cinnamon muffins (a name ive improvised) that i saw while running around other friends of friends blogs - (these came from andimae i believe) and they came out very very... well not like i anticipated. they tasted ok, but were certainly not what i was anticipating! its all in the cook i think - and this cook is not the best with things that involve making dough annd then rolling it, watching it rise, or other various things that i refer to as "scary advanced baking!) :):) but im working on it and some day im sure the words "cut crisco into mixture" will not frighten me as much. despite their odd appearance, the muffins are almost all gone...

we also got to try out a new restaruant this weekend - and it might be a favorite after only one visit! its called barcelona's and its a tapas place in downtown indy -if you come out here, make sure bryan and i take you there - it was fabulous. bryan always jokes that i say everything reminds me of seattle - but this place really did! the colors were bright and lively and the loud talkyness of the place was right out of fremont! the food - awesome! cant wait to go back..

simple is the best

I'm writing this while sitting in our new hammock out on our porch - i dont think there's a better place in the world than this. We just got back from getting frozen custard and the fire flies are popping out in the back yard. what a wonderful thursday night - why does this get so easily forgotten by confusion and complications of life? i mean, the moment is so good right now and so easily it gets swept away in little things that are vexing or annoying.

why dont we indulge these moments a little more, make a little bit more a part of daily life instead of infrequent snapshots? I feel lucky to have this spot to sit and watch these fireflies tonight, all around the yard. last night we watched the space station and the shuttle fly across the sky, and we kept thinking we saw shooting stars - nope just these little guys doing their part in the shiny night time.

i lose my faith in a lot of things rather quickly, or rather, i falter a lot in believing things will work out. i would love to change this pattern and be able to figure out the good - or trust what is coming even though it may not be here soon enough for impatient me.

friday favorites

one of my favorite places for the last 27 years. i will most certainly go for a walk here when i am home - any takers to go with me?

coming and going

I've just found out that a co-worker's father has passed away, a co-worker not very much older than myself - and it just makes me pause and think (as it should i guess).

Part of my job here at work is to read the obituaries daily to see if any of our donors have passed away and if so, if we need to follow-up with condolences and flowers and i have to say, this gets to me after awhile. somedays, the entries make me cry (which is a wee embarrassing here at work). other days i zip through them without a second thought to the sadness that others must be suffering.

i read an article this week about the "over-medicalization" of society - basically commenting on how quick we are to diagnose ANYTHING and get medicine to treat it and though i have many opinions for and against about the validity of modern medicine, what the article did make me wish for was a place with more interaction with life and death, so it wasnt so scary or so sad. It seems like on both ends of the spectrum, also for a variety of reasons, births and deaths have been removed from the daily function of our lives, and, at least for me, they've become scary in their mystique.

I suppose hearing about my co-workers loss, reading the obits daily, and just watching my own family's methods of dealing with aging has made these observations of mine the way they are, but it really is amazing how quickly life comes and goes from us.

peaceful sleeping

we slept outside again last night, with milo not barking at mysterious noises once! it was peaceful, quiet, and there's something so nice about not setting an alarm clock. even though i end up waking up earlier than i normally would, its a natural slow process, not one thats jarring and sudden, and repetetive, as ive been known to push the snooze button many many times... which has been known to annoy the boy, who can usually squeeze one more hour of sleep out of the morning than i, given his predisposition to short morning routines and a little commute to work.

we finally just bought our tickets to my brothers wedding in seattle this august - it feels nice to have finally checked that off the list. we're flying out, staying for a week, and then heading to south dakota via denver for another wedding, this time for the boys friend from college. I'm sure we'll be wedding'ed out by the end of the trip, but we've put a little mini-roadtrip there in the middle of it - a drive from denver up to rapid city which will be great. i love roadtrips and cant help but look forward to this one in a part of the country i havent been to in a while.

we've got a couple little plans for this weekend - checking out a new desk for our "office" and maybe some bookcases too.. i like hunting for little things for our house and making it suit us..
What else will happen this weekend? maybe we'll take milo on some sort of adventure drive and get some of his energy used up :)

Bountiful

I love payday. i love it for all the reasons that everyone else does, but i also love it because it means i can go to the grocery store and shop with just a little more abandon than i normally would do. one of my favorite things to do is really stock up the kitchen - fresh fruit, different kinds of meat, sandwich makings, meal plans for the next couple days. At first bryan and i were pretty bad at making it all get used, but ive pared back a bit, and we're trying harder to use what we have - it becomes like sort of contest to see what kind of meal we can pull together out of the remnants in the fridge.

i also love grocery stores - love them! and i am a complete and total sucker for any kind of "different" grocery store. Silly, but true, i have driven out of my way to go to a certain store, whose "feel" i like better than the ones close to home. But i must say, i am quite taken with our little kroger store by our house. im reconizing all the people there, the teenage baggers and stern deli ladies, and i know where most things are - a huge thing in grocery store familiarity and love! So while it may not be Whole Foods or PCC, it'll do just fine :)

letting it be

"When I want you to be some other way than you actually are, I suffer. You suffer. The more I can let the moment, the situation, the nap, the house, be exactly as it is... there is so much more room for joy. These are big lessons for the adult humans of the world."

Projects at Home

Only 5 more hours until the weekend. I can't wait. We've got a couple projects on our plate around the house, and this weekend I'm looking forward to puttering/working on the house, catching up on all the things we've let go over the past couple weeks.

Maybe I'll get some of these things done:
Finish painting our bedroom - I've done two walls, but i need to finish the other two, which involve moving our bed (ug.) It will be nice though, to finish and have a fresh coat of paint to brighten everything up. We've decided on white and yellow ( a nice compliment to our green bathroom) so it will be cheery and comforting inside, even on rainy days.

Order a new blind(s) for our bedroom and/or the living room. We have these old ones, that are fine i suppose, but they're from the 80's im sure, and are plastic crinkly and strange. I had in mind some nice fabric that would hang over the window but the let the sun filter through. I suppose if i was at all efficiant at the sewing machine, this would something i could easily do. But im not, and it would prob. take me 8 years to do, so in the name of checking projects off and not taking on more than i can handle, i'll probably order some instead.

Find a set of hooks to hang by the sliding door to hang our keys etc. on. We always drop our "stuff" onto the kitchen counter and i was thinking it might look nice to have something to hang things on, or a nice table of some sort by the door to place the mail and maybe a bowl on for our things. hmm, i will think about this and figure out what will work best. there's lots of garage sales this weekend, this would be a perfect place to find a unique and random piece..

Finish painting the trim on the windows outside. We primed them a long time ago and now really need to get them painted so we can open the windows and let the fresh air in!

And of course, i have all the other little things i want to do: vacuum, write letters, sleep in, eat something scumptious. I think we're going to make coconut curry chicken tonight - I'll buy the ingriendiants and Bryan will cook.
We're cool like that :)

middle of the week already!

Hello! Ack! I know i said i was going to do such a good job with posting and the last two + weeks seem to have just swept by so fast! Wednesday night already, late here in Indianapolis.

we got home tonight to find a huge box on our front porch ( i love getting packages - who doesn't?) and the best part was to find inside Milo's year supply of Frisbees! Last year bryan found a website and ordered 50 Frisbees that were printed with mistake logos on them so they were really cheap - milo didn't seem to mind the less than perfect wording- he loved the 50 Frisbees until they couldn't fly anymore. it was getting bad around here - entering June with only 2 Frisbees that were still aerodynamically functional. so this year, bryan surprised us by ordering 100! and frost bite ones at that! so exciting...

The other day, i also got a devastatingly wonderful package from my good friend in Maine of all places - kristen kamp. . .. she sent this great cd that arrived with tons of great music that has been keeping me company on the way to work ever since. Ive got it stuck on tracks 15 and 16 by a girl named JayMay - have you heard of her? the cd was great - i love it when there's a title of a song and a band, and the only description being " devastatingly handsome banjo.guitar player from pittsburgh." i mean really, can a song synopsis get much better than that? :)

the past few weeks, as Ive mentioned before, have been full of visitors..we love it but i also cant wait to just lay on my bed, perhaps in the middle of the day and take a cat nap! with nothing to do! on our weekend to do list is the lovely task of hanging a hammock on our screened in porch (kamper - was that on our non negotiables list?!) and transplant some flowers and plants from little baby containers to the ground. really i have a million other things that i feel like i could do, but those will take the precedent over all others.

I've included some pictures above to show all our great friends and family who've been in town for the month of may.. enjoy :)

And last but not least - Kamper - Happy Birthday! I've been meaning to do a birthday post for you but i don't have any digital pictures! so i guess this birthday with will have to suffice for the time being until i see you next and i can fill the memory card to the gills!

Friday

I cant believe the week has flown by as fast as it has! or that it is a new month - i have been lazy with posting this week, mainly because i wanted to download pictures from my friends visit and create a nice word synopsis to go with. but i guess that will come after this weekend :)

My mom (hurray!) is visiting this weekend, and so im sure it will be a lovely one. I was able to get the house in order, and bryan picked her up right on time yesterday at the indianapolis international airport!!!!!! (would you believe we have oen!!??) we brought in the night with a barbeque of gourmet hamburgers (hats off to chef bryan) and other treats. tonight on the agenda is tiring out the doggy so we can take mom to a indianapolis indians minor baseball league game. its supposed to rain all weekend, so we thought tonight it would be a good time to take her and at the same time, show her the city. i love this little baseball field. its sort of like a minurature version of safeco field - sitting right downtown on the canal, and with lots of green grass to sit in. its always best to sit in the green, then you can watch the game AND all the kids rolling around and getting grass stains. its a really fun way to spend the evening.

i hope you all have a wonderful weekend. any special plans?
